Discover the novel "Ruth" by Elizabeth Gaskell
On the eve of International Women’s Day join us as Joyce Caplan introduces us to a powerful book written in 1853 by Elizabeth Gaskell.
She.wrote “Ruth’ about a young girl groomed by her seducer, becoming pregnant yet managing to sustain a life for her and her child. Unthinkable at that time. The book received a fevered response – “an immoral book by an immoral woman”. It was thrown on fires, banned by Clubs, Universities, Libraries and denounced from pulpits.
Elizabeth said “the only comparison I can find for myself is St.Sebastian tied to a tree to be shot with arrows” She was ahead of her time yet her struggles would still find resonance in our contemporary world.
Joyce Caplan is a lecturer, specialising in Scottish Poetry. Chair of the Poetry Association of Scotland, Joyce is always interested in making connections and is involved with the University of Edinburgh, the Scottish Arts Club, the Muriel Spark Society and numerous other organisations.
