British NewWave cinema the Pioneering work of the free cinema movement of the 1950s developed into the 'cinema verite' or 'verismo' style of filmmaking referred to as new wave cinema.

The films typically depict the lives of working class individuals in a realistic and gritty manner. They often feature themes of social realism and highlight the struggles and aspirations of the working class notable examples include 'Room at the top' (1959), 'Saturday Night and Sunday morning (1960),  'A Taste of Honey' (1961),  The Servant (1963) and 'The loneliness of the longest runner' (1962)
