War Artists in Scotland in the Twentieth Century

Scottish war art in the twentieth century – and since – has been vibrant and dramatic, and its memorials have been notably original yet dignified. This well-illustrated talk describes developments over the century, and the contribution of many different artists. From the turn of the century, with the war in South Africa, through two World Wars and several later conflicts, we look at both Scottish artists and the valuable contribution by others who came to Scotland from England and abroad. Also to be discussed is the difficulty of remembering war, both in easel painting and in public memorials. Much of the work produced has been the subject of disapproval or debate. And until recently, the contribution made by women artists has all too often been overlooked
