Mario Group Jazz
Another Great Jazz Session from the improvising and versatile modern jazz musicians who have re-grouped to entertain us with this fine jazz evening. Mario Caribe (bass) Chick Lyall (piano) and Kevin McKenzie (guitar) In the Club Room, Scottish Arts Club - an informal and intimate venue within an Edinburgh Georgian House in the New Town.
Mario Caribe
Mario is well renowned as a double bass player in Edinburgh’s Jazz Scene.When not performing, Mario is a Bass lecturer on the Jazz programme of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.Born in Sao Paulo-Brazil, Mario moved to Scotland for studies, and was invited to join the Tommy Smith Sextet Beasts of Scotland, and later, the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra. He has played with many of the leading jazz musicians in the U.K and the US.Mario is also involved in Jazz Education, having done several workshops about Latin American Music throughout Scotland. He also taught at the National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland Summer Course 1999, The Napier Jazz Summer Course 1999 and Dundee Play Jazz. He is currently involved with the The Scottish National Jazz Orchestra, John Rae’s ‘Celtic Feet‘, the Paul Harrison Trio, the John Burgess Quartet, Carlos Pena Y Sus Muchachos, Brazilliance, Laura McDonald Quartet, Eddie Severn Quintet, Martin Kershaw Quartet, Tom McNiven Quartet as well as working on his own projects.

Kevin McKenzie
Kevin Mackenzie lives in Scotland. He has toured extensively and has recorded on many albums in a variety of styles.His groups have been featured along side guitarist Robben Fords power trio, Bob Berg and Mike Stern, the Crusaders and Seminal Jazz figure Ornette Coleman. In 2001 Kevin received the prestigious ‘Creative Scotland Award’, which he used to write and record music for his nine-piece band ‘Kevin Mackenzie’s Vital Signs’. The CD gathered great reviews including album of the month in The Observer and CD of the week in The Guardian. His latest release is with the Organ trio ‘PRIME’ (2021)

Chick Lyall
Chick is an accomplished pianist, composer and jazz musician who has performed previously in Scottish Arts Trust Concerts with his long term musical colleague Rob Hall. With Rob, Chick has published several CDs of original work, including ‘Rhyme or Reason’, ‘Blithe Spirit’ and most recently ‘Upward Fall’. He composed ‘ The Crying of the Fair’ and premiered it with Rob in October 2023 at the Scottish Arts Club. Earlier this year in August, Chick played a jazz session with Colin Steele and Ed Kelly at the Club giving an excellent improvised rendition of ‘The Great American Songbook’. Chick has over the years partnered with various musicians in duos,‘Green Room’ with David Garret and with Tore Brunborg. And we look forward to this new trio ‘Mario’s Group’
