How to map a country

Talk by Andrew Redmond Barr

Edinburgh writer and artist Andrew Redmond Barr presents the Atlas of Scotland, a creative project which uses intricate hand-drawn maps and illustrations to tell Scotland’s story. The Atlas explores in detail how Scotland was made, its history and culture, as well as its long standing as one of the ancient kingdoms of Europe.
In addition to mapping Scotland as a whole, the Atlas also explores the individual local histories of each of Scotland’s cities, plus 12 of its historic towns. Finally, this Atlas then takes you far beyond Scotland, looking at many of the fascinating ways Scotland has connected with the outside world throughout history – from the old European trade routes of Scottish merchants, to the Scottish National Antarctic Expedition, and so much more.

Andrew Redmond Barr is a writer and artist from Edinburgh. His work aims to make Scottish history and culture more accessible through a variety of unique creative projects. Andrew is the author of three illustrated books, the latest being a hand-drawn Atlas of Scotland. In 2022 Andrew became artist in residence at the Schotse Huizen (Scottish Houses), a local museum in the historic Dutch port of Veere. The town was the Kingdom of Scotland’s primary trading gateway to Europe for several hundred years. Andrew carried out research into the town’s historic Scottish community, and wrote about his experiences in a three-part travel diary for The Sunday National.
