Chipping Away at Hugh by Kath Hay
Chipping Away at Hugh: The boy from Cromarty who became a world-famous geologist admired by Darwin, but also a poet, author and editor, as well as a fierce supporter of the Disruption of 1843
Hugh Miller was one of the most famous geologists of his time and was admired by experts across the world. Starting life in a tiny croft-house in Cromarty on the Black Isle, he became a stonemason, then a poet, author and editor and moved to live in Edinburgh. Hugh was also a fierce supporter of the Disruption of 1843, but then what happened?
Kath Hay has worked within the publishing industry for more than 50 years, with book, periodical and newspaper publishers in London, Melbourne and Edinburgh and was appointed Head of the Professional Publishers Association in Scotland, a post she held for 12 years. Currently, she provides editorial support for various organisations and local community magazines. Kath also has a keen interest in music – both as a folk singer in the 60s and 70s and also as a member of Edinburgh Festival Chorus for 32 years, performing at home and abroad. Kath enjoys presenting her talks to many Associations and Clubs, in and around Edinburgh, and also further afield.
