The Best Bus in Britain. So Why Isn’t It Enough?

The Best Bus in Britain. So Why Isn’t It Enough?
Edinburgh has the best publicly owned bus network in Britain – and no confirmed plan for meeting its own car-reduction targets. This talk uses Scotland’s National Transport Strategy to examine three live controversies the city has not yet resolved.

Achille Fonzone is Professor of Transport Analysis and Planning at Edinburgh Napier University. His research explores travel attitudes and behaviour in relation to sustainable and automated mobility, with a particular focus on equity, safety, and the opportunities created by connected and autonomous vehicles. He led the societal research strand of CAVForth, the UK’s flagship autonomous vehicle project which built and operated the world’s first fleet of full-size level 4 autonomous buses on the Forth Road Bridge. He has published extensively in top-ranked transport journals including Transportation Research Parts A, B and C, and serves as Associate Editor of the Journal of Intelligent Transport Systems. He chaired the Euro Working Group on Transportation conference in 2025.
