An Artist's View of the historic mills & railway on the Water of Leith
Alan Lucas, son of the artist Edwin G. Lucas (1911-1990), takes us on a trip down the Water of Leith from Currie, via Juniper Green and Colinton Dell, to Slateford. His talk is richly illustrated by his father’s paintings, made during the 1930s-40s, together with historic and contemporary photographs of the same scenes. Expect to see many of the mills that used to operate on this stretch of the river, and the Caledonian Railway line that was built to serve the mills.
Although not the main focus of this talk, Alan will also touch upon his father’s artistic career more broadly. In particular his posthumous recognition as a notable Scottish artist who took inspiration from Surrealism in the 1930s.
Alan works as a software developer. In his spare time he carries out research into his father’s career, organises exhibitions of his work, and is the author and administrator of the website www.EdwinGLucas.com.

The Scottish Arts Club hosts various dining and evening events, such as the annual St. Andrew’s Night dinner, and other events like concerts and talks. The Dining Room can accommodate formal dinners of up to 50 but can be partitioned for more intimate events
