Book Launch: The Seedsman's Daughter | Hilary Munro
Join us for the launch of SAC member Hilary Munro’s remarkable new book, ‘The Seedsman’s Daughter’.
The Seedman’s Daughter is the remarkable true story of pioneer May Sutton. Born into the Sutton family (of Sutton Seeds fame) in which the sons are groomed as future soldiers and heads of the family firm, May has only one career, to marry (and marry well) and have children. May refuses. She meets Scottish war hero Fred Chater-Jack and follows him to Kenya for marriage, to the disapproval of her family.
Based on actual letters and journals in the archive May left organised as if chapters of a book, we follow her as a young bride in 1924 through hardship, success, failure, triumph and disaster, until they sail back into the gathering storm of war in 1939. It is though not May’s story as she wanted it told. At the bottom of her father’s archive is an envelope of letters revealing the ambiguous and disturbing killing of nanny Gertrude Kuhn by Fred, apparently mistaking her for a leopard. The Seedsman’s Daughter becomes both an intimate memoir and a compelling work of historical investigation.
