Coltrane: Ewan Johnston Band

100 years after John Coltrane was born, his music and influence as an improviser and composer is still felt deeply. With his commitment to sharing his perspective, spreading love, improvising at the highest level, working with greats such as Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk and creating some of the most influential music of the last century, John Coltrane is not a name to be forgotten. His unbridled intensity of expression through the saxophone has left a lasting imprint on the world, coupled with the fact he centered his music around freedom and the spreading of a love supreme.

To celebrate his centennial, Ewan Johnston is bringing a stellar band to The Scottish Arts Club specially for this occasion. Consisting of Harry Weir on tenor sax, having worked extensively with bands like corto.alto, Kai Reesu and Kitti as well as leading his own projects AKU! and Blue Boar Brass, Harry Weir is one of the leading lights and a true powerhouse on the tenor sax in the UK.

On double bass, the incomparable Christopher Quinn, working with Laura MacDonald, Kitti, Tao and many other bands across Scotland he is one of the most sought after bass players.

Chun-Wei Kang is a similarly unique musician, with infectious energy behind the drums and a deep commitment to music and people, he is a perfect channel to step into the shoes of Trane’s legendary drummer, Elvin Jones. Kang runs his own project ‘New Song’, showcasing his beautiful compositions as well as his drumming

And lastly Ewan Johnston, having graced the Art’s Club stage a few times for various fringe shows, he comes back with his own band for this celebration. He has worked extensively across the Scottish music scene running his own projects MODERNISTIC, Ewan Johnston Trio, Making Nature and Bletherin’ as well as being a part of numerous other projects like Tao, Laura Osa, GAIA, Terra Kin.

Bring your appetite for explosive acoustic music, open ears, hearts and minds and let’s celebrate the legacy of John Coltrane together.
